Mail Privacy Protection, Hide My Email and inflated opens - the Apple-specific traps senders overlook.
How Apple Mail Is Different
Apple Mail and iCloud filtering is quieter than Gmail's or Microsoft's, but two Apple features shape deliverability in ways senders often miss. Apple does honor SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and iCloud will junk unauthenticated bulk mail.
Mail Privacy Protection
Since 2021, Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) pre-loads images for Apple Mail users through Apple's proxy, which means opens are inflated and unreliable for that segment. If a large share of your list uses Apple Mail, your open rate is partly fiction - and any automation that keys off opens (re-engagement, open-based segmentation) is being fed bad data.
Hide My Email
iCloud+ users can generate per-site relay addresses (@privaterelay.appleid.com) through Hide My Email. These are real, deliverable addresses that forward to the user - but they can be switched off by the user at any time, after which mail hard-bounces. Treat bounces from relay addresses as a normal signal to suppress, not a list-quality failure.
What Senders Should Do
Authenticate fully, stop treating opens as a reliable engagement metric (lean on clicks, replies and conversions instead), and handle Apple relay bounces cleanly. For deliverability itself, the fundamentals that satisfy Gmail and Microsoft satisfy Apple too.
