A working definition, why validation isn't enough, and the practices that protect your sender reputation.
A Working Definition
B2B data hygiene is the ongoing practice of keeping a business email list accurate, current, deduplicated and safe to send to. It covers removing addresses that no longer work, suppressing ones that are risky to contact, merging duplicates, and dropping contacts who have gone cold - so that what remains is a list of real people who can and want to receive your mail.
The key phrase is “safe to send to.” In B2B, an address can be perfectly valid and still be the wrong one to email.
Why It's Not Just Validation
Email validation checks whether an address is syntactically correct and whether the mailbox exists. That is useful, but it is a snapshot of technical validity, not of risk. A validated address can still be a spam trap, a role inbox, or a departed employee's mailbox now routed to a security scanner. Hygiene is the broader discipline that asks whether you should send at all. The distinction is covered in full in validation vs hygiene.
Why It Matters for Deliverability
Mailbox providers judge you partly by who you send to. Hit enough dead addresses and you look like a sender working from a stale, purchased, or poorly-maintained list - and that drags your reputation down for everyone, including the recipients who do want your mail. Clean data is not housekeeping; it is reputation protection.
The Core Practices
Validate on capture and before major sends; suppress role-based and known-risky addresses; remove long-term non-engagers; dedupe across variants; and monitor bounces and complaints as an early-warning system. The point is never the biggest list - it is the most deliverable one.
