For example, let's say we send out a regular weekly newsletter to our database, and we have an in-person event coming up in Boston within 3 weeks. We want to craft only one email to go out to all subscribers, yet we also want to make sure that an invitation to the in-person event in Boston is shown (within the email) to contacts located in Boston only.

Previously, we probably would have crafted two distinct emails, one for Boston contacts, and one for everyone else with the corresponding content. But now, with the smart content feature of HubSpot, we need only to adjust a setting so that the same email is displayed with different content edits to contacts based on specific criteria like in this case having their City = Boston, and all without having to craft two different emails, or even needing to create two different recipient lists.

And that's truly powerful because 1) all contacts receive the same communication that they're already familiar with as subscribers, but 2) part of the content is tailored to promoting things that are relevant (and contextual) to them based on preferences, interests, interactions with our brand, or, as in the example, something as simple as their current location.
